The German offensive in December 1944 became the basis for this all-star Hollywood take on the Battle of the Bulge. Henry Fonda is an officer who predicts the assault, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews are Army brass skeptical of his intuitions, and Robert Shaw (his hair dyed yellow and his eyes glinting with malice) is a German officer leading the tank attack. Shaw is certainly the most compelling thing about the film, especially in his philosophical debates with ambivalent underling Hans Christian Blech. Elsewhere, the movie jumps around to sidebar stories (cowardly James MacArthur becomes a leader, wheeler-dealer Telly Savalas falls in love) while messing around with the historical facts of the battle. There are interesting episodes, such as the Malmedy massacre of American POWs and the Germans' use of English-speaking spies, but overall Battle of the Bulge has the feeling of having been patched together from different scripts. On the physical level the movie comes up short, with the Spanish locations rarely suggesting the wintry misery of the battle, and the use of models and studio sets highly inadequate. A number of war films from this era are compelling on their own terms, but in the wake of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, this one looks antique. --Robert Horton

The Complete History of the Pittsburgh Steelers is NFL Films' amazing 142-minute overview of one of the NFL's most storied and successful franchises. It begins with the team's humble start as the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1933, its first star, Byron "Whizzer" White (who soon gave up football glory for school and an eventual seat on the U.S. Supreme Court), and a by-necessity wartime merger with Pennsylvania's other team to form the Phil-Pitt Steagles. Subsequent years brought their move to the fledgling AFC, the hiring of coach Chuck Noll, and an influx of better players such as Joe Green, Terry Bradshaw (when he had hair!), Lynn Swann, and Jack Lambert. That led in turn to Franco Harris's "Immaculate Reception" and four Super Bowl championships in a span of six years. But the history doesn't end there. Also covered are players such as Rod Woodson, Kordell "Slash" Stewart, Hines Ward, and Ben Roethlisberger, the passing of owner Art Rooney, a new coach in square-jawed native son Bill Cowher, the disappointment of Super Bowl XXX, the infamous coin-flip fiasco, the demolition of Three Rivers Stadium, and the team's relationship with its community, up to and including the team's 2004 season.
If that's not enough, the two-DVD set also adds three and a half hours of bonus features. There's the 48-minute "NFL's Greatest Games" installment about Super Bowl XIII, 40-minute featurettes on Cowher, Jerome Betttis, and Bradshaw, and shorter pieces on Harris's Italian fan club, Rocky Bleier, broadcaster Myron Cope, longtime running back and coach Dick Hoak, and the first player mic'd for sound, linebacker Bill Saul. Obviously The Complete History of the Pittsburgh Steelers is a must-own for Steeltown fans, but it should also appeal to almost anyone interested in football history. --David Horiuchi

Less asinine than Jackass and more "real" than The Hills, MTV's reality series Rob & Big is an entertaining diversion that mixes friendship and a few crazy stunts into each episode. In this four-disc box set, all 16 episodes from the first two seasons of the show are included. Rob Dyrdek may not be the most famous skateboarder out there, but he is charismatic, funny, and apparently has the means to charter a private jet so he can fly off to pick up his new puppy Meaty. Christopher "Big Black" Boykin is Rob's best friend and bodyguard. Boykin's size often is used as a visual gag, but he's rarely presented in a mean-spirited fashion. Even when he's showing off his girth in a G-string (don't ask), he's clearly in on the joke. The show is built around the odd couple premise of the long-time friends. But like Snoop Dogg's Father Hood, the episodes' most enjoyable elements aren't the crazy antics, but the everyday slices of life that the characters experience. Watching Dyrdek return home to the Midwest where his family clearly misses him is rather touching. And seeing Boykin's relatives prepare for a family reunion is a lot of fun. There are some episodes that obviously are set up for the cameras: Would the pals actually have purchased a time machine if they weren't being filmed to do so? And would anyone really buy a minature horse to keep their dog company (or listen to a dog psychic that tells them they need a woman in the house)? Clearly, no. But the point is that the duo has a show and knows how to entertain its audience. And instead of focusing on contrived romances or feuds with frenemies, this reality series focuses on friendship. There's also an added dose of reality when the stars of the show aren't always treated as such. The look on Dyrdek's face when he's described in a newspaper as a "C-lister" is priceless not because it's true, but because he understands his role in the Hollywood food chain. --Jae-Ha Kim
