Less asinine than Jackass and more "real" than The Hills, MTV's reality series Rob & Big is an entertaining diversion that mixes friendship and a few crazy stunts into each episode. In this four-disc box set, all 16 episodes from the first two seasons of the show are included. Rob Dyrdek may not be the most famous skateboarder out there, but he is charismatic, funny, and apparently has the means to charter a private jet so he can fly off to pick up his new puppy Meaty. Christopher "Big Black" Boykin is Rob's best friend and bodyguard. Boykin's size often is used as a visual gag, but he's rarely presented in a mean-spirited fashion. Even when he's showing off his girth in a G-string (don't ask), he's clearly in on the joke. The show is built around the odd couple premise of the long-time friends. But like Snoop Dogg's Father Hood, the episodes' most enjoyable elements aren't the crazy antics, but the everyday slices of life that the characters experience. Watching Dyrdek return home to the Midwest where his family clearly misses him is rather touching. And seeing Boykin's relatives prepare for a family reunion is a lot of fun. There are some episodes that obviously are set up for the cameras: Would the pals actually have purchased a time machine if they weren't being filmed to do so? And would anyone really buy a minature horse to keep their dog company (or listen to a dog psychic that tells them they need a woman in the house)? Clearly, no. But the point is that the duo has a show and knows how to entertain its audience. And instead of focusing on contrived romances or feuds with frenemies, this reality series focuses on friendship. There's also an added dose of reality when the stars of the show aren't always treated as such. The look on Dyrdek's face when he's described in a newspaper as a "C-lister" is priceless not because it's true, but because he understands his role in the Hollywood food chain. --Jae-Ha Kim

Buster Keaton
Marion Mack
Buster Keaton's career reached its creative apex with this rousing comic adventure. Not merely one of the finest silent films, this remains one of the great film comedies of all time. The Great Stone Face stars as Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray, a man with only two loves: the sweet Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack) and his trustworthy engine, the eponymous General. When Fort Sumner is fired upon he's one of the first to enlist, but when the war office rejects him (he's too valuable as a trained engineer) his sweetie rejects him as a coward. Johnny has the opportunity to prove his bravery when Yankee spies steal his engine and inadvertently kidnap Annabelle, and Johnny pursues with all the resources at his disposal: handcar, bicycle, and finally railroad engine. Keaton's love/hate relationship with technology and machinery shines as he becomes one with his beloved locomotive and wrestles with a finicky cannon that threatens to blow his engine off the tracks; with tremendous dexterity, he nails the humor with inimitably deadpan takes. Spunky Marion Mack makes a perfect partner for Keaton, not merely a foil but a gifted comedienne in her own right. Other Keaton films contain more laughs and inspired comic stunts, but none combines romance, adventure, and comedy into a solid story as seamlessly as this silent masterpiece. --Sean Axmaker

Shot in HD! Look, but don’t touch.
Yes, the warmth and beauty of a wood-burning fireplace is mesmerizing. But, all fires and fireplaces are not created equal which is evident from Ambient Fire: The Ultimate Video Fireplace DVD. Visually, the DVD leaves nothing to be desired. It looks spectacular.
There are a variety of different fireplaces on the DVD, obviously a desire to cater to everyone’s taste. There are "just logs", a marble fireplace, a "modern" fireplace, "just flames", a "cuddle-up-next-to-the-fire Holiday scene" which features lots of holiday decorations and a train going around a tree, and even a campfire scene. Features a total of 9 different scenes. Smartly, they’ve made the most "desirable" scenes 35 minutes long and scenes like the campfire only 10 minutes. Of course, you can loop any of the scenes for endless playback.
Includes 5.1 fire sound effects and a variety of music choices including classical, guitar, and holiday. You can even choose to have the sound of fire mixed in with the music – a nice touch. This DVD, like its aquarium counterpart, Ambient Water, includes built-in playlists as well as the ability to create custom playlists.

Reading is simply putting words together to discover a story. When Mr. Websley glimpses Tad and his friends rehearsing "The Three Little Pigs," he reminisces about favorite childhood stories and is struck with an idea for a new invention--a talking storybook. Frog and Quigley are called to construct a new factory and Tad and his friends begin to rehearse in earnest since they're slated to be the stars of the book. Problem is, Tad has been cast as the narrator, but he doesn't know how to read. Professor Quigley and Leap reassure Tad that he already knows everything he needs to know to be a successful reader: he learned his letters and the sounds they make in the Letter Factory and that sounds combine to make words in the Talking Words Factory. All that's left is to combine the words to make a story. Tad learns some new tricks like "chunking" words together to sound like talking and that punctuation markings like commas and periods help with inflection. In no time, Tad is reading fluently and it looks like the talking storybook will be ready right on schedule. Viewers age 4 to 6 will develop their reading and comprehension skills right along with Tad thanks to on-screen highlighted text. DVD extras include a read-along storybook of a somewhat untraditional version of "The Three Little Pigs" that can be played with or without a voice track and five sing-along songs. --Tami Horiuchi

Scott, Dave, Rich, and Smitty--the Imagination Movers--make music that's as much for parents as kids. While their lyrics are aimed at the short set, their bouncy tunes evoke pop and funk acts like Smash Mouth, Devo, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (without any profanity or sexual innuendo). The first DVD from the New Orleans-based quartet, Stir It Up, features a heaping helping of material from both their CDs, Good Ideas and Calling All Movers. Lively videos alternate with energetic live performances, many of which feature audience participation. Some songs, like "I Want My Mommy (Time for Bed)," combine both approaches. Fans of the Wiggles and Bob the Builder are sure to find themselves tapping their toes with abandon, while learning some useful lessons along the way, like the importance of remembering your manners ("Please and Thank You") and tidying up ("Clean My Room"). The beauty of this entry in the Baby Einstein catalog is its integration of puppets, toys, and live farm footage to help babies and toddlers make the connection between their plastic play sets and stuffed animals with images of a real farm. As always, the spoken language is minimal, omitting the pesky verbs and adjectives that would confuse the very young. The 30-minute main program is divided into sections: barns and equipment, animals, planting crops, and harvesting. Background music ranges from "Old MacDonald" to Schumann, and DVD extras include a 6-minute puppet show and visual "discovery cards" identifying animals and farm paraphernalia with a single word. Like the albatross glimpsed in the beginning of this 10-part, 5-volume series, The Life of Birds quickly takes flight. Sir David Attenborough hosts this unprecedented and extraordinary global look at the magnificent and often curious winged species with which we share our planet. Like the best wildlife shows, The Life of Birds offers a fresh and accessible view of creatures we may take for granted (didn't Alfred Hitchcock warn us about that?). The focus of this series is not on the different bird species, but on bird behavior. Remarkable and awe-inspiring footage preserves the wide range of tools and techniques with which birds fly, hunt for food, attract a mate, hatch their chicks, and defend themselves against predators.
Each volume contains two episodes. Series titles include: "To Fly or Not to Fly?," "The Mastery of Flight," "The Insatiable Appetite," "Meat Eaters," "Fishing for a Living," Signals and Songs," "Finding Partners" (the inevitable mating episode), "The Demands of the Egg," "The Problems of Parenthood," and "The Limits of Endurance." One comedic diversion while watching this series is the Pythonesque (as in Monty) way in which Attenborough pops up in the most remote, most exotic locales. At one point, night-vision cameras capture the rare sight of the nocturnal kiwi as it forages for food on a New Zealand beach. The camera pans to reveal scant paces away our guide shining a flashlight on the nonplussed bird. Attenborough is also the creator of the classic natural-science series The Trials of Life, The Living Planet, and Life on Earth, all of which are also available on video. --Donald Liebenson
