Fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi, the hero of the fantasy-adventure Yu Yu Hakusho, brags about being the toughest kid in Sarayashki Junior High: He lives to fight, especially with his rival Kuwabara. When Yusuke's killed saving a little boy from a speeding car, he's given another chance by Koenma, the son of the ruler of the Spirit World. If Yusuke properly nurtures a "spirit egg," it will hatch into a benevolent beast that can help him return to his body permanently; too much negative energy will produce a monster that will devour him. Yusuke temporarily wins his life back with some help from Kayko (or Keiko), the girl he secretly loves, and Botan, the pretty pilot of the River Styx. Koenma makes him a "spirit detective," assigned to tracking down evil spirits prowling the human world. Yusuke's evolution from selfish thug to good guy includes some false steps, but he defeats his first foes with a mixture of daring, imagination, luck--and kindness. He wins over Kuwabara and the demons Kurama and Hiei, and undergoes special training from super-psychic Genkai. Yusuke and his allies battle the four "Saint Beasts," demons associated with the Chinese directional animals, and rescue a Snow Maiden imprisoned by a corrupt capitalist. These episodes conclude with the opening of the Dark Tournament, a sort of supernatural WWF tag-team smackdown that will take up most of the next two seasons. This popular comedy-adventure plays like a cross between Dragon Ball Z and a minor Frank Capra movie. This excellent theatrical feature is loosely based on the Swan Lake story. Princess Odette, having been turned into a swan by a sorcerer's spell, is held captive at the enchanted lake with friends Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle, and Puffin the bird. Along comes Prince Derek, who becomes involved in liberating her by taking on the villain. The movie has been criticized for being too similar to Sleeping Beauty, but once you're watching it--with its strong characters, entertaining vocal performances (John Cleese and Steven Wright are particularly funny), fine artwork, and action--such complaints are negligible. --Tom Keogh

Based on a series of best-selling novels by Nagaru Tanigawa, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006) overflows with zany energy. Despite the title, Haruhi Suzumiya is anything but melancholy: she's a bossy, outspoken high school girl who's searching for "aliens, time travelers, and espers." To aid her search, Haruhi founds a new club, The SOS Brigade. Although she doesn't realize it, Haruhi has actually found what she's looking for in her recruits: Yuki is an alien; Mikuru, a time traveler; Itsuki, an esper. Kyon, the put-upon narrator,is normal--at least superficially.Itsuki warns Kyon that the existence of the universe may depend on Haruhi's whims. When she gets upset, dark gaps open between dimensions, haunted by shinji (ghostly giants) whom Itsuki and other espers must destroy. Kyon wonders if he's having nightmares or protecting the world from destruction, but this storyline recedes as the series progresses. Like Dokkoida and Magical Shopping ArcadeAbenobashi, Melancholy spoofs the clichés of anime and otaku culture. When the president of the computer club challenges the SOS Brigade to a duel playing "Day of Sagittarius 3," the episode turns into an outrageous spoof of sci-fi anime, with Haruhi shouting commands from the bridge of an imaginary space ship. But the series stops, rather than ends, with the story unresolved as Haruhi and Kyon walk off into the rain. Given the popularity of Melancholy in Japan and the US, a sequel may be in the works. The first episodes of the second season of Fullmetal Alchemist focus on the origins of the Homunculi. Izumi reveals that when Edward and Alphonse attempted to bring their mother back from the dead, they disturbed the order of the universe more profoundly than they could imagine. Ed remembers confronting a mysterious Gate that seemed to guard the path to all knowledge. The artists based the design on Rodin's Gates of Hell, and its swirling human forms lend an appropriately grim power to the visuals. A new Wrath appears at the same time Greed has been freed from decades of confinement. When Ed fights Greed, he discovers that the Homunculi have weaknesses and can be destroyed under the right conditions. The fallen city of Ishbal remains at the center of the search for the Philosopher's Stone. Sheska's research into the death of Gen. Hughes suggests a link to Ishbalan war and the mysterious Col. Juliet Douglas who supposedly triggered it. Ed and Al reach the ruins of Ishbal and learn the true story of its destruction before Cols. Mustang and Kimbley arrive with an army. In nearby Liore, Ed finds himself caught between a monstrous plot hatched by Scar, Lust, and Gluttony, and the sinister plans of the Scarlet Alchemist, Lt. Col. Frank Archer, and their military superiors. Many series falter and grow repetitious in their second season; Fullmetal Alchemist only gets better. As the saga of the Elric Brothers unfolds, director Seiji Mizushima deftly blends powerful emotional drama, physical action and broad comedy into an unusually engaging adventure-fantasy. The second half of the first season of the hit fantasy-adventure Fullmetal Alchemist offers some of the most emotionally intense moments in the series. Dr. Marcoh's research into the creation of a Philosopher's Stone leads Edward and Alphonse Elric to the secret Military Laboratory #5. In its dungeons, the brothers find that Shou Tucker has continued producing chimeras, helping to draw them to the Lab. But Tucker is just a pawn for the Homunculi, Lust, Envy, and Gluttony, who want the Philosopher's Stone--which they believe Ed can create. Edward is faced with the terrible choice of losing Al or committing multiple murders when the experiment is interrupted by Scar, the avenging survivor of Ishbal. The Elric brothers' inner struggles eclipse the violent external battles: Al has begun to doubt that he ever existed in human form; Ed fears that Al hates him for delving into the forbidden knowledge that destroyed his body. After escaping from the Lab, Ed and Al meet up with the one individual they fear: their brutal but loving instructor Izumi. Realizing that the Elrics committed the crime of attempting human transmutation, Izumi sends them back to the island where they began their apprenticeship. The filmmakers intercut the Brothers' present sojourn with flashbacks of their early training, suggesting the ongoing journey to mastery of the art of alchemy. The dramatic episodes are balanced against comedic moments with Winrey, Major Armstrong and Col. Hughes. The brothers share a rare, carefree moment in Resembool, sparring and roughhousing. Despite his mechanical limbs, Ed frolics unselfconsciously in a sleeveless shirt and shorts--something no American animated character could do. Many anime series lose momentum after their first season; Fullmetal Alchemist only gets better. (Rated TV PG: violence, grotesque imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

The Fullmetal Alchemist theatrical feature, The Conqueror of Shamballa, takes place two years after the last episode of the popular broadcast series. Edward Elric has been transported to Earth and is living in Weimar-era Munich with Alphonse Heiderich, a young engineer who reminds him of Al. This Alphonse is working for the Thule Society, a group of Aryan fanatics who hope to cross dimensions to the world they call Shambala and acquire weapons that will ensure a German victory in the next war. Back in the world where the broadcast series took place, a restored Alphonse Elric searches for a way to bring Ed back. A combination of science and alchemy finally reunites the brothers--with unexpected consequences. Although the film is an exciting adventure that includes many of the familiar characters, viewers who haven't watched the TV series may have trouble sorting out who's who and what's where. Sadly, The Conqueror of Shamballa marks the end of director Seiji Mizushima's and screenwriter Shou Aikawa's work with the Elric brothers: together, they preserved the essence of Hiromu Arakawa's winning characters while adapting them to a new medium. Arakawa is continuing the manga, so fans may one day see further animated adventures of Ed and Al.(Rated PG: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
