Jim Henson's fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn't take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Henson and codirector Frank Oz have pushed puppetry into a new direction: traditional puppets, marionettes, giant bodysuits, and mechanical constructions are mixed seamlessly in a fantasy world of towering castles, simple huts, dank caves, a giant clockwork observatory, and a magnificent landscape that seem to have leaped off the pages of a storybook. Muppet fans will recognize many of the voice actors--a few characters sound awfully close to familiar comic creations--but otherwise it's a completely alien world made familiar by a mythic quest that resonates through stories over the ages. --Sean Axmaker

In the second season of the popular fantasy-adventure Bleach, Ichigo,Chad, Ohime, Ishida, and Master Yoruichi the talking cat pass through the inter-dimensional portal linking Earth to the segregated world of the Soul Society. Lost souls are consigned to the run-down Rukon ("Drifting Spirit Town"), where Yoruichi obtains help from pyrotechnician Kukaku to get into the stronghold the Seireitei. Although the teen-agers have crossed space and time to rescue Rukia, no one knows where she's imprisoned--or where they are--in that city-sized compound. Ichigo and his new ally Ganju seize timid janitor Hanataro: He knows where Rukia is and secret ways to get there. Director Noriyuke Abe skillfully mixes overlapping movements, slow-motion, unusual camera angles, reverse colors, and black-and-white to heighten the drama of the sword fights between Ichigo's team and the bizarre-looking officers of the Soul Society. But the internal conflicts often prove more compelling than the external ones. Viewers learn why Chad never uses his awesome strength in his own interest; Ichigo discovers that he must use his sword as an ally, rather than as a tool. By submitting to Zangetsu, the spirit of the sword, he acquires greater power. But Bleach never stays too serious for too long: Ichigo and Ganju squabble, even in dire straights, and an overhead shot of Ichigo fleeing a squad of Soul Reapers looks like a table-top Pac-Man game.The satisfying balancee of comedy, adventure, and well-choreographed battles has made Bleach a smash hit in Japan and America. Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure Castle in the Sky (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. Castle echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier Nausicaä, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away. Disney's new English dub, which features Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (pirate matriarch Dola), is lively and close in tone to the original Japanese, if a bit talkier. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make Castle in the Sky a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. Major Kusanagi and the rest of Public Security Section 9 hit the ground running as the second season of Stand Alone Complex (2004) begins: Their new adventure centers on a complex mystery even more dangerous than the case of the Laughing Man. Terrorist incidents linked to the mistreatment of Asian refugees after World War IV threaten to ignite a powder keg in Japan. Kusanagi, Batou, and even Chief Aramaki chafe when they're drafted to protect Prime Minister Kayabuki from would-be assassins. But the threats to the government are linked to the Individual Eleven, a cell that recalls the May 15th Incident. (On May 15, 1932, a group of junior naval officers and army cadets assassinated Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi, ensuring that power would remain in the hands of the militarists.) The members of the Individual Eleven--except for Hideo Kuze, their charismatic leader--commit mass suicide in a bloody spectacle that recalls the theatrical death in 1970 of Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. Kuze's campaign to win political freedom for the refugees grows increasingly violent, involving suicide bombers, Russian mobsters selling stolen plutonium, and strained relations between Japan and an Imperial America that is trying to reassert its military dominance in the face of economic weakness. And what role does the devious, hideously scarred intelligence officer Kazundo Gohda play in these actions? The Tachikoma robots speculate that as they are abandoning collective consciousness and developing individuality, a dependence on the Net is leading humans in the opposite direction. That trend makes people more vulnerable to cyber-viruses involved in the plot--unless Section 9 acts in time. Most of the adventures take place in bleak, gray and brown settings, which contrast effectively with the bright, colorful cyberworld the Major and the Tachikomas visit. S.A.C.--2nd Gig continues the tight plotting, dynamic action sequences, and interesting character relationships that made the series a hit. As the first of the three Bleach feature films opens, Ichigo and Rukia are having a typical squabble--with Kon-butting in--when hordes of "Blanks" appear: weird white creatures that look vaguely like snowmen with pink caps. Senna, a Soul Reaper neither of them recognize, bursts into view and destroys the creatures. Although he initially finds her irritating, Ichigo grows fond of this strange girl, who leads him into a deadly conflict with a rebellious clan banished from the Soul Society a century earlier. Ganryu, the leader of the clan, recognizes Senna as a Shinenju, an entity composed of the memories of thousands of lost souls. He plans to use her latent power to destroy both the Soul Society and the World of the Living. Ichigo stops him with the assistance of the Soul Reaper Captains and Lieutenants. Memories of Nobody (2006) intensifies the main theme of the Bleach series: Ichigo's desire to protect those he cares about. Although director Noriyuki Abe stages the fight scenes with his usual panache--and more special effects than a television budget allows--Memories of Nobody has a more melancholy tone than the more comedic series. As the film reunites most of the creative team from the program, it often plays like an extended TV episode, but a touching one that will please Bleach fans. A second disc of extras includes two standard making-of documentaries, trailers in Japanese and English, and copies of the storyboards. Episodes No. 121 through No. 135 of the hit ninja fantasy Naruto bridge the end of Season 5 and the start of Season 6, concluding one arc of the story. Shikamaru's mission to retrieve Sasuke from Orochimaru's henchmen falters, but Rock Lee and three familiar ninja from the Sand Village come to the rescue. The combatants employ fantastic jutsu, especially when Gaara battles Kimimaro, who creates weapons from his own bones. Rock Lee mistakenly drinks some sake and performs his own version of the "drunken fist" martial arts style in an homage to Jackie Chan. But the story also falters: the first seven episodes focus on the same fights, which drag on and on. The plot reaches its climax as Naruto confronts Sasuke at Final Lake, atop the enormous carved guardians of a waterfall. In flashbacks, the viewer learns that Sasuke desires the power to avenge his brother's murder of their family--regardless of its cost. The friendship he shares with Naruto makes their duel more meaningful and intense. As the strength of Orochimaru's curse mark intensifies, Sasuke transforms, sprouting hand-like wings; some of the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox-Demon imprisoned within Naruto's body emerges. A new storyline begins when Jiraiya a.k.a. "Pervy Sage," comes to the hospital and announces he has three years to train Naruto to the level of Shinobi. Three years must pass before Orochimaru can take possession of Sasuke's body--and in three years' time, the sinister Akatsuki organization plans to strike at Naruto to obtain the Fox-Demon's power. The outré reverse-harem comedy Ouran High School Host Club (2006) continues the tradition of gender-bending anime. Ouran High is a private academy, catering to the super-rich and superficial. To amuse themselves--and bring in a few extra yen--the richest, most attractive boys in the school have set up a host club, where they dispense tea and charm to the girls. Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student who's such a schlump no one realizes she's a girl, stumbles into the club and breaks an antique vase. To repay the cost of the vase, the members demand she dress as a boy and join the club. Although she's an outsider and a "commoner," Haruhi soon becomes the boys' favorite. Club president Tamaki (who represents the "blond prince" type) falls for her; Mitsukuni ("Lolita boy") adores her, as do identical twins Hikaru and Kaoru ("forbidden brotherly love"). Neither the viewers nor the characters can take these silly stories seriously, but High School Host Club will delight fans of bishonen (beautiful boys).
