Sir Integra reluctantly invites Maxwell from the Vatican’s Iscariot Division to a Roundtable conference with the Queen. Amidst the panicking Roundtable members, Arucard seems completely amused by the reunion with the Major, whom he thought he has destroyed more than half a century ago. He puts a bullet through the emissary’s forehead as he replies to the Major, "I can’t wait to destroy you again!" –A war of Nightmares is about to be unleashed into the unsuspecting London night…

Matrix writer-directors Larry and Andy Wachowski commissioned seven artists from Japan, America and Korea to make nine short films set in the world of their feature trilogy. Some of the top anime directors contributed to this anthology, including Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll), Koji Morimoto (Robot Carnival), and Shinchiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop). Some of the films tie directly into the narrative of the live-action movies. Drawn in a style reminiscent of Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Mahiro Maeda's The Second Renaissance (Part I & Part II) depicts the human-machine wars that caused the enslavement of humanity and the creation of the Matrix. The duel between two flamboyantly costumed Kabuki warriors in Kawajiri's Program is an expanded version of the cybernetic training Neo (Keanu Reeves) undergoes in the first Matrix film. Watanabe evokes the look of old newspaper photographs in A Detective Story, which falls outside the storyline of the features. Fast-paced, violent and grim, The Animatrix is an uneven but intriguing compilation that represents a new level in the ongoing cross-pollination between Japanese animation and American live action. (Not rated, suitable for ages 16 and older: considerable violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

This 99-episode adventure from 2006 features characters, places, and Pokémon from the Sinnoh region, the setting for the Diamond and Pearl edition of the video game. Ash, Pikachu, and Aipom set out from Pallet Town in hopes of winning battles and badges. Almost immediately, they meet up with Brock, who has become a skilled Pokémon healer, and Dawn, an argumentative 10-year-old who wants to become a star Coordinator. Professor Rowan presents Dawn with a Piplup, a penguin-like Pokémon, while Ash acquires a Grass-type Turtwig. Brock befriends a Croagunk, a frog-like Poison Pokémon who slaps him and drags him away whenever he begins romancing Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny, or some other hapless girl. Ash acquires a rival in Paul, a rude trainer who treats his Pokémon with neither respect nor affection: Their competition runs through the series. Most of the episodes represent Poké-business as usual. Ash tries entering a Contest with Dawn, but his focus on battle moves rather than grace quickly gets him eliminated. Dawn learns how to use a Pokéball and begins developing routines for the Contest circuit. Jessie, James, and Meowth of Team Rocket build increasingly elaborate machines to capture Pikachu and other Pokémon, but invariably go down in flames. Ash fails in his initial attempt to win the Coal Badge from Roarke of the Oreburg Gym, but with 82 episodes to go, he doesn't need to hurry. (Rated A, suitable for All Ages: minor cartoon violence.) --Charles Solomon

The first feature Katsuhiro Otomo has written and directed since his watershed Akira (1988), Steamboy offers a fantastic, sepia-toned vision of the past-as-future. In place of the dystopic Neo-Tokyo of Akira, Steamboy is set in England in 1866. Young Ray Steam receives a Steam Ball, a mysterious, powerful device, from his inventor grandfather. Governments and businesses covet the Steam Ball, and Ray finds himself in a murderous conflict over its possession. He's also caught between his father, a 19th century Darth Vader who builds terrible weapons for an American arms merchant, and his grandfather, who believes science should improve people's lives. Otomo uses computer graphics to create dazzling visuals that few recent films--animated or live action--can match: monumental systems of gears and pistons; machines that dwarf the Tower of London; antique weapons of mass destruction. But the dazzling imagery can't disguise the lack of a coherent plot and the flimsiness of the characters.
Steamboy is being released in a dubbed version that's been shortened by 20 minutes, and a more satisfying subtitled version that preserves Otomo's original pacing. Both versions suggest that Steamboy is the work of an important filmmaker who can't quite shape his awesome visions into a effective narrative. (Rated PG-13 for action violence.) --Charles Solomon

As the 12th Dragon Ball Z movie (1995) opens, a young demon causes a major accident at King Yemma's checkpoint for souls. Centuries of karmic sludge transform the demon into Janempa, a gargantuan monster who breaks down the barriers between dimensions, allowing the living and the dead to mingle. As Janempa resembles an enormous yellow Pokémon and is surrounded by what appear to be giant hard candies, he doesn't feel like much of a threat. When Goku attacks him, Janempa mutates into Janemba, a reptilian android in a horned helmet. The only way to defeat this monster is for Goku to fuse with the dead Vegeta into an even more powerful Saiyan. After an embarrassing error, they form Gogeta, an ultimate warrior who cleans Janemba's clock. One of the weakest Dragon Ball movies, Fusion Reborn is a long, silly build-up to a climax that ends before it really begins. (Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 10 and older: violence, a Hitler caricature viewers may find offensive) --Charles Solomon
