If the antics of Kenny, Cartman and the rest of the South Park boys have grown too stale for your tastes, there's plenty of appalling kid behavior on display in Shin Chan, Adult Swim's raucous redubbing of the popular Japanese anime series. The North American version follows the essence of the source material: Shin Chan is a five-year-old Japanese boy with a knack for making his parents, teachers and friends crazy with highly inappropriate statements and behavior (most notably a penchant for nudity and shaking his butt). But the scripts by anime vets Jared Hedges, Joel Bergin and Alex Muniz (with contributions by acclaimed comic book creators Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer on the first six episodes) spin the basic premise into surreal and decidedly adult areas (let's just say that bodily functions, aberrant sexuality, and a cornucopia of mental illnesses are the order of the day). Characters are also tweaked for shock effect--the school's principal, a fairly benevolent figure in the original anime, is now a bizarre half-Gypsy with a sordid past, while Tooru, Shin Chin's nervous nellie of a pal, is now Georgie, a five-year-old neo-con. The absurdity of the dubbing is peppered with frequent pop culture references, which can grow wearying after a while, but the sheer rudeness of the storylines generally overpowers any rough patches.
The DVD feature 13 of the first season's 26 episodes, which are spread over two discs; extras include lively commentary on Episode 4 ("Get Your Hands Off My Happy Cake!") with line producer Laura Bailey, who also voices Shin Chan, along with director Zach Bolton and recording engineer Peter Hawksworth. Series fans will undoubtedly be delighted by "From the Bowels of the Booth," which offers a battery of exceptionally crude alternate line readings from various episodes, as well as an episode with its original Japanese language track (subtitles are included). Vocal talent auditions and trailers for Funinmation's other anime DVD releases, including Witchblade, One Piece and Full Metal Panic round out the supplemental features. -- Paul Gaita

The second season of the popular comedy-adventure Naruto begins with the second round of the Chunin exams. To reintroduce the main characters, the eternally impatient Naruto Uzumaki starts the show "27 minutes early--in the time slot of The Prince of Tennis"--so everyone has to scramble to fill the time until the videotape arrives. But once this very silly introduction concludes, the tone of the series darkens and the relationships grow more complicated. Brooding, beetle-browed Rock Lee reveals his affection for Sakura, just as she's coming to terms with her former best friend (and rival for Sasuke's affection) Ino. Sakura and Sasuke grudgingly gain a little respect for Naruto--when he's not annoying them by shooting off his big mouth. But the most significant development is the emergence of the villain Orochimaru, a reptilian character with a prehensile tongue Gene Simmons would envy. One of the most notorious and deadly criminals in ninja history, Orochimaru is drawn to Sasuke's extraordinary abilities, and he plans to ensnare the young ninja as an accomplice. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke fail to grasp the seriousness of Orochimaru's plot, although the Hokage and his lieutenants are on the alert. This dire threat infuses the often slapstick antics of Squad Seven with a menace the first season lacked. Naruto may still be everybody's favorite knucklehead, but he's up against much tougher foes. The three-disc comes with the bound storyboards (in Japanese only) of Episode #29, "Naruto's Counterattack: Never Give In!" Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, the eighth Pokémon movie, ranks as one of the best features in this popular franchise. Director Kunihiko Yuyama and writer Hideki Sonoda sensibly keep the adventures and threats to a scale that's appropriate for the characters. (The first movies put the world at risk, and while Ash Ketchum is a good kid, he's not someone who can credibly save the planet.) Ash, Brock, Max, and May journey to Cameron Palace for a tournament that celebrates the valor of Prince Aaron, who saved the realm from destruction 1,000 years ago. Ash and Pikachu win, but the mischievous Mew kidnaps Pikachu, whom he's befriended. Prince Aaron's Pokémon companion Lucario awakens from the victor's staff to lead Ash and the gang to the Tree of Beginning, a mountain that is also a living entity. Ash risks his life to rescue Pikachu, proving the depth of their friendship to Lucario. The film includes lots of CG effects, most of which work well with the drawn animation: the earlier Pokémon films tended to look like two different movies spliced together.
The two-disc set also includes The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon: A 10th Anniversary Special. In this 40-minute adventure, Dr. Yung invites Misty and Ash to take part in a special tournament on his new battle system. Yung creates formidable Mirage Pokémon from raw data, culminating in a super-version of Mewtwo, the powerful psychic Pokémon from the first features. Once again, friendship and kindness triumph over greed and arrogance, although the special ends with the words, "To be continued..." Jhonen Vasquez
Comic book artist Jhonen Vasquez's outré sci-fi spoof, which ran on Nicktoons at Night from March 2001 to December 2002, remains the object of a vociferous cult following. Pressure from the fans compelled Nickelodeon to resume production of Invader Zim twice before the show was cancelled permanently. The title character is a zealous, none-too-bright agent from the Irken Empire posing a human boy. Zim imagines he's gathering vital information for the imminent conquest of Earth; the Irken leaders actually sent him here to get rid of him. With the rather spotty assistance of Gir, his robot sidekick disguised as a dog, Zim alternately sneers at humanity and gets himself into trouble. The only person who recognizes Zim as an alien is his UFO-obsessed classmate, Dib.
The two-disc set is loaded with extras that will delight fans of the show, including commentaries by Vasquez and several of the story and voice artists, a second "commentary" of pigs grunting, subtitles in Irken, and the original pilot for the series. The uninitiated may find Invader Zim suggests a cross between Dexter's Laboratory and Jimmy Neutron re-imagined by Tim Burton. The bizarre designs, over-the-top vocal performances, and bodily function jokes are not for the faint-hearted, but they're not supposed to be. As the runaway hit fantasy Naruto nears its midpoint, the tone continues to darken and the stakes grow higher. The Fourth Hokage sacrifices his life to save the Hidden Leaf Village fromOrochimaru, and removes the evil ninja's ability to employ jutsu. But even those measures don't completely eliminate the danger he poses, and a new, more dire threat appears: Sasuke's rebel brother Itachi and his follower Kisame covet the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox Demon imprisoned within Naruto's body. The sinister pair is already strong enough to defeat Kakashi-sensei and Sasuke. To protect Naruto, Jiraiya takes him on a training journey to find the designated next Hokage: the formidable Lady Tsunade. But Orochimaru is also seeking Tsunade, as she alone can remove the seal that limits his powers. Naruto remains as irrepressibly rambunctious as ever, devouring ramen and addressing Jiraiya as "Pervy Sage" (a title he richly deserves). But the young ninja is being to grow up. To master a powerful new jutsu, he has to learn to concentrate his latent powers and develop some discipline. Naruto is willing to apply himself so he can grow strong enough to protect his friends and the Hidden Leaf Village, something he is destined to do. The potential is there: Believe it! The Special Edition comes with a "limited edition collectible" of another summoning creature, Gamakichi the Toad.(Rated T+ Older Teen; suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, toilet humor, risqué humor, grotesque imagery, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

In modern-day Japan, the worlds of the humans and the yokai often collide, and usually not in the most pleasant of manners.
Half-human and half-yokai, one-eyed Kitaro (Wentz Eiji) lives with his eyeball father and his bickering friends, Nezumi Otoko (Oizumi Yo) and Neko Musume (Tanaka Rena), in Gegege Forest where he dedicates his time to maintaining peace between humans and yokai.
But when a magical ball of power ends up in the wrong hands, Kitaro must recover it or both worlds could fall into grave danger.
Mizuki Shigeru's beloved manga series, KITARO (Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro), has seen numerous small and big screen adaptations since the 1960s, but this 2007 film is without a doubt the most visually stunning effort yet. Directed by Katsuhide Motoki (Drugstore Girl) with a screenplay from Habara Daisuke (Hula Girls), KITARO is set in a delightful world populated by Japanese folklore creatures called yokai, demon spirits with supernatural powers. Yokai come in many shapes and forms with the film bringing them to life in a fanciful fusion of CG, animation, and live-action, with everything from cat spirits to walking eyeballs roaming through ancient forests and modern Japan.

The action-adventure series Black Lagoon (2006) exemplifies the continuing confluence of Japanese and American filmmaking. Rokura Okajima, a minor flunkey in a powerful corporation, thinks his life is over when he's kidnapped by pirates. It's only his business career that ends: he joins the pirates as "Rock." The trio of Dutch, the understated leader; happy-go-lucky techie Benny; and trigger-happy Revy becomes a quartet, although Rock struggles to find a place in their shady underworld. They're less pirates than soldiers of fortune, ready to do anything if the price is right. Dutch, Benny, and Rock are fairly typical anime types and form a credible team. But murderous, potty-mouthed Revy has all the appeal of a rattlesnake in an Easter basket. This less-than-jolly crew pursues adventures involving treasure aboard a sunken WWII U-Boat, pornographers, drug and arms dealing nuns, kidnappings, and a terrorist plot to blow up US embassies. Bullets, blood and four-letter words fly, but it doesn't add up to much. The gun battles, car chases, knife fights, and explosions take up so much screen time, there's none left for character development or a coherent narrative. Although it's based on a manga by Rei Hiroe, Black Lagoon feels like a cartoon version of a Hollywood blockbuster. Extremely violent and profane, Black Lagoon is not for the squeamish or easily offended. (Unrated appropriate for viewers over 17: graphic violence, violence against women, extensive profanity, grotesque imagery, alcohol and tobacco use, racial slurs, offensive ethnic stereotypes, Nazi imagery, offensive religious imagery) --Charles Solomon
