When will singers learn that some classic songs cannot be song by anyone? I was very disappointed with the purchase of my first Brian McKnight CD. He attempts to sing the Nat King Cole classic, The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire)and it is just awful. The rest of the tunes range from good to adequate. During the holidays, I would fast forward to the second song because I could not bear to him try to sing this classic song in a "supposed" upbeat tempo. Nat King Cole set the standard over 60 years ago. There are no male singers today (Luther V. is singing in the heavenly choir)who can come close to Cole's or Vandross' excellence. I will be reluctant in the future to purchase another McKnight CD. Rating: 5 Gratest Holiday Album Ever! I've been a Brian McKnight fan since I was a teenager, and I would have to say that this is his best holiday album yet! My favorite song on the album is Angels We Have Heard on High: with Josh Groban. It seems like everytime he goes into the studio he goes in as himself, and he always leaves his fans wondering, "What Next!" Rating: 4 Joy to the world What more can be said? Brian could sing the ABC's and it would sound great. I am sure the ladies, single or married, will be under the mistletoe this Christmas with Brian in the background. Rating: 4 Some highlights Some of the albums is a bit generic, but there are gems--particularly his Marvin Gaye-esque "The Christmas Song", singing with his sons, and a special visit by Take 6. Rating: 5 I'm back in the Holiday spirit...Thanks Brian!!!! If there's anything that I love about this time of year are Christmas Carols...and Brian Mcknight does it serious justice here!! I liked the soulful vibe his Bethlehem album, but this one is without a doubt a classic! I'll be home for Christmas is a great rendition, I'm gonna run over to my piano and play it right after I'm done writing this! Who would have thought is another beautiful rendition...damn...Brian...you are great at soulful ballads! It's all the other stuff I sometimes wonder about. Pick up this album...you will be glad that you did!! Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder are smiling somewhere. |
