Another Awesome Dar CD
I have only been familiar with Dar Williams for a couple of years. My boyfriend has been a big long time fan. This is my favorite CD thus far. This past summer, we saw her at an small outdoor concert and where she performed these tracks without accompaniment. We couldn't wait until this CD came out and have enjoyed every track.

Another very good listen
It seems funny to me that whenever someone branches out and tries different things...or god forbid becomes more popular with the masses that they are either a sell-out or not as interesting as an artist any more. It is true that this CD has more of a pop element to it, but it is very well done. The songs are well written and catchy as one would suspect from Dar Williams and as a whole the entire thing sounds gorgeous. I would certainly steer people who are new to Dar Williams back to her earlier work if only to see how she has moved stylistically from that point to this one. The bottom line is that if her name is on the cover, you can be sure that you are in store for a pleasurable experience from one of this generations truly gifted singer-songwriters. I for one am glad that Dar Williams has just not stuck to one sound and aimed to churn the same album out time after time.

unexpected fun
Shopping for music at amazon one of the recommendations was this item. Dar Willimas might be a known artist in the US she certainly is not in The Netherlands. After listening to the samples I decided to buy the album. When I received it I started listening and experienced that a part of the songs (the more up tempo ones) are easy listing and tend to come to you on the basis of the flow instead of the lyrics. The others come to you on the basis of the lyrics. The best song or me is go to the woods with backgroubd vocal from Suzanne Vega on it. The start is not very promissing however the song brings the fine combination of two voices and a good flow of the music. The album is a good mix of different song tempos. The booklet is very nice, the artwork is just great although the lyrics are sometimes hard to read. I will explore more of Dar's work to see if it is as good as this one.

A Journey
Dar Williams' latest album is a "must" to have for your cd collection. A powerful blend of folk rock, reflection on today's challenges, as well as a personal story. Each song is different yet they all tie in together from beginning to end never leaving you unsatisfied. I highly recommend this album.

Unexpectedly delightful
I had never heard of Dar Williams before hearing an interview with her on NPR. Intrigued by the pieces of songs played as part of that interview, I bought Promised Land.
It contains a wonderfully varied set of songs, all with interesting settings and well sung. Williams has a wonderful voice that she uses well to enhance both the sound her music and the meaning behind the lyrics -- although sometimes that makes it hard to hear the exact words. I quickly found myself singing parts of them to myself during the day, Some, like "The Business of Things" can really stay with you.
As a university professor of psychology, I was bowled over the first time I heard "Buzzer." I can think of know other recording based on a psychology experiment, even one as famous as Milgrim's work on obedience.
