Excellent CD
This is a really great CD. I'd give it 5 stars except for a few things that I noticed but I'm being REALLY picky. First, the songs all "sound" the same in that they're mixed alike. Nothing jumps out as being different sounding than the others. In that same vein, I wish there was more separation between the musicians and that the drummer was more out in front. I have a really nice system in my car and I would have loved to hear all the nuances of his playing. However, again - this is really great music all around played by fabulous musicians. Tom

Listen to it 3 times
I was only marginally impressed after the first listen. However, after a few times through I began noticing some amazing subtleties and nuances that completely changed my opinion of the album. It's jazz from a rock perspective. It's intelligent and well thought out. I bought it to "support the home team" after seeing him with Widespread Panic a million times and am pleased with my purchase.

Great JAZZ
I have followed Jimmy since he is from my home town. I really like the fact that he finally got a chance to do his own thing. I can feel the man smiling through every song while he plays. He has top notch musicians playing with him. There is some nice horn and flute on here as well. It is guitar focused, modern classic jazz and really recommend it. check out his website [...] to get the entire breakdown track by track.

more laid back
I expected a more busy and fast selection than was presented here. Still good stuff and I am listening to it more and more but was expecting more of a Project Z.

Greatest 70's Fusion Album Never Made
This is an outstanding effort from Herring. I was wary of another aimless "jam" effort, (while Project Z has its moments, one must admit that it lacks any real direction or originality,) but the guitarist and his pals have truly crafted something special. "Lifeboat" is neither a jam band record or a guitar hero wankfest...the songs strike a perfect blend of melodic songwriting and improvisation, immaculate arrangements, (there are flutes, alto and soprano saxophones, keyboards/pianos, and one killer bass solo,) and balls-to-the-wall group interactions. Most of the songs would likely fall under the "jazz-rock fusion" category, but there are tracks that fall firmly onto both sides of the line.
Lifeboat is tasteful, original, and flawlessly executed, and as a soloist and the clear musical focus of this record, Jimmy Herring is a 10; you can be different, but you can't be better. He's got unbelievable chops, but he uses them as a means for creating soulful, exhilarating pieces of music, rather than a series of excuses for shredderiffic yawn-athons. What's more, his bandmates are given ample room to shine for themselves, which sets this album apart from 9 out of 10 instrumental guitar albums.
In all, an amazing album with endless replay value. Buy it.
